FALSE CREEK GRANDRAGONS
The FALSE CREEK GRANDRAGONS were the first mixed seniors dragon boat racing team formed in Canada. Based in Vancouver’s False Creek, the Grandragons, have taken a lead role in promoting senior dragon boat racing on the West Coast of Canada .While we are a recreational team we take a serious approach to competing in regattas, and have collected medals in a number of festivals - 4 medals in 2024 - there is a strong social connection amoung the team members, with extra cirricular activities taking place such as coffee, potlucks, bowling etc. Over the years, the team has developed into a strong competitor at dragon boat festivals.
The Grandragons are committed to promoting and assisting the development of seniors’ dragon boat racing across Canada as an excellent activity enabling them to maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle. We believe that participating in dragon boating is an excellent way to retain good health and a zest for living.
Our purpose as stated in the Grandragons’ constitution is to:
The Grandragons practice at Granville Island on Monday and Thursday mornings between 10:00am and 11:45 with a coffee social after each practice. The season beings mid February and continues through to mid November. The Grandragons welcomes all new members with no experience necessary! Our team has an excellent coach who is a member of the False Creek Premier Team and the Canadian national Dragonboat team.
The Grandragons team includes a wide range of paddling abilities. Our coaches are high level athletes who have personally performed and trained teams in local, national and international competitions in a variety of water sports. Their mandate is to help each of us paddle to the best of our ability.
New team members (men and women over 50) are welcomed at anytime. Please come and join us in this action sport and the vibrant Dragon boat community.
Practices are focused and vigorous but we also socialize for fun and relaxation see: YouTube videos. We meet at the gym in off season to stay fit and stay in touch.
Social events among Grandragons members and their partners are a very important part of our team experience. After each practice we head to a local coffee shop. Some members meet for bowling, others for table tennis. We have been know to hold socials after regattas and a member often hosts a Holiday party.
